Text  The required text for the course is Fundamentals of Financial Management, 9th edition, by Brigham and Houston. A course packet with class notes and other readings is also available through the copy center at Harvill.
Objective This is a beginning level finance class which will focus on the time value of money, project analysis, risk and return, and financial decision making.  By the end of the course, each student should have a basic understanding of how financial decisions are made.
Homework Homework problems will be assigned for each topic.  They will not be collected or graded.  However, it is highly recommended that you work through assigned problems because your quiz questions will come directly from the homework and many of your test questions will be very similar to the homework problems.  The problem sets and copies of solutions will be available from Harvill Copy Center.
Calculator  A financial calculator is highly recommended and will be used extensively in class.  A calculator will be allowed on all tests.  If you need to purchase a calculator I recommend the Texas Instruments BA II, or a similar calculator which has the following functions: present value (PV), future value (FV), and internal rate of return (IRR).  Please read and understand the operating instructions for your calculator.  You are responsible for knowing how to operate your own calculator.
Grading

Midterm I and II:    25 %  each       Quizzes: 20 %          Final Exam:    30 %

I expect that the cutoff for an “A” will be 90%, a “B” will be 80%, a “C” will be 70%, and a “D” will be 60%.

Quizzes We will have a quiz on each chapter the day after we complete our discussion of it.  The quizzes will be announced and will be similar to one or two of your homework problems.  There will be no makeup.  A zero will be assigned for missed quizzes.  Two lowest grades will be dropped.
Final Exam  The final exam will be given on December 14 from 8:00 to 10:00 am, which is the same as the date and time listed in the catalog.  The final exam will be comprehensive, but will concentrate on the material covered after the second midterm.
