Led by Professor Yu-Chen Chan
Welcome to the Cognitive and Hedonic-Affective Neuroscience Laboratory (CHAN Lab) at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), directed by Professor Yu-Chen Chan The name CHAN Lab is derived not only from Prof. Yu-Chen Chan’s surname (Chan) but also represents the lab’s core research domains—Cognitive (C), Hedonic (H, related to pleasure), Affective (A, related to emotions), and Neuroscience (N).
This interdisciplinary integration enables us to explore the interactions between psychological processes and neural mechanisms in depth. Our research encompasses a broad range of cognitive processes, including learning, memory, motivation, attention, and creativity. In the hedonic and affective experiences domain, we focus on how rewards influence happiness and well-being, as well as the interactions between pleasurable experiences and broader emotional processing. Additionally, we explore topics such as humor, social emotions, personality traits, and individual differences. We integrate cognitive, social, and personality psychology methodologies, utilizing correlational and experimental approaches in behavioral research. Additionally, we employ advanced neuroimaging techniques, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and event-related potentials (ERP), to enhance our understanding of the mind and brain. In recent years, our research has further expanded into clinical psychology, focusing on mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, autism spectrum disorders, and schizophrenia. We aim to investigate the psychological and neural mechanisms underlying these conditions through a fundamental research perspective, contributing to a deeper understanding of neuropsychology. Our lab's logo cleverly highlights the "HA" in "CHAN," symbolizing our focus on humor and emotional processes, which are central cognitive and affective neuroscience topics. This unique design reflects our commitment to studying happiness, emotional regulation, and neural mechanisms, showcasing our forward-thinking perspective and innovative contributions to cognitive and affective sciences and the integration of neuropsychological applications. We sincerely invite researchers, students, and collaborators who are passionate about psychology and neuroscience to join the CHAN Lab. Together, let us advance interdisciplinary research, explore the complex mechanisms of the human mind and brain, expand our understanding of cognition, hedonics, and affect, and create new possibilities for fundamental and applied research.
