Introduction to English

Dear Students,

Welcome to Introduction to English.  In this one-semester course we will learn some fascinating facts about the English language.   After a brief review of the sound system of English (using the terminology of linguistics), we will look at the origins of English and its development into modern English.  After that, we will survey the many varieties of English throughout the world and look at the social origins of variation in language.  Finally, we will look at the writing system and how it changed, and the development of dictionaries.  I think this stuff is great fun and this semester I will be sharing the fun with you.

The syllabus appears below.  All other materials used in class are available for your review on the university's e-learning platform, except for those with embedded sound files, while will not work on Blackboard.  These you can find below.  For the others, go to http://elearn.nthu.edu.tw and log in.  If you don't have a password, click "forgot password" and you will be able to get one.
