Chapter 11

Here we have the entrance of Robin Hood with a French accent.  The song has some interesting lyrics.  Robin Hood says, "I like an honest fight and a saucy little maid" and the archers say "What he’s basically saying is he likes to get ---"  The man answers "paid" but what native speakers expect is "laid" meaning he likes to have sex (remember the rooster song--instead of laying eggs, the rooster was laying hens!)

The man than sings, "When an ogre in the bush grabs a lady by the tush, that’s bad.Tush or tushie refers to the buttocks or, more informally, one's ass.  A more creative definition of this area of one's anatomy is "the permanent vertical smile".

After Princess Fiona defeats Robin Hood, Shrek is surprised and asks, "Hold the phone.  Whoa whoa whoa hold on now. Where did that come from?"  These are some more expressions for "Wait a minute."  Whoa is the word used to say "stop" to a horse, usually said while pulling on the horses reins (leather straps).

Chapter 12

Donkey refers to his animal instincts.  In humans, the animal part is more basic.  People should not behave like animals but use their rationality to go beyond their basic animal natures and act better than animals.  Nevertheless, it is sometimes thought that animals, through their instinct, may more easily see truth because they are not blinded by human tricks.  Is instinct based on fact?

Donkey also refers to pherenomes when he tells Shrek,  "Wake up and smell the pherenomes."  Scientists tell us these are smells that subconsciously indicate sexual attractiveness.
