Chapter 6

Shrek says, seeing the castle for the first time, "Sure it's big enough, but look at the location!" Here the dialogue pokes fun at real estate agents.

Notice the following dialogue.  When you wear something on your sleeve, it's open and obvious, not hidden.  A common expression is to wear one's heart on one's sleeve.

Donkey:    ...  Donkeys don’t have layers.  We wear our fear right out there on our sleeves.

Shrek:      Wait a second.  Donkeys don’t have sleeves.

Donkey:    You know what I mean.

Notice the princess says things like "Thou beeth" and "out yonder window".  She is imitating some forms and expressions used in older forms of English, the long, long ago when fairy tales are said to have taken place.

Notice the double meaning of the word ass in the following.  Princess Fiona thinks Shrek is leaving her alone in order to save himself, but he is actually referring to Donkey.  The word ass comes from the Latin asinus and refers to this kind of animal.

Fiona:    Wait, where are you going?  The exit’s over there.

Shrek:    Well, I have to save my ass.
